HE’S SEEN THE FUTURE… NOW HE HAS TO KILL IT. HE’LL NEED BIGGER GUNS. In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets, in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop "Harley" Stone (Rutger Hauer, Blade Runner) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks like his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall, Big Trouble in Little China) is next on the killer's list. Even in the future, there aren't guns big enough to stop the creature's deadly force, but Stone has no choice. Teamed with rookie detective Durkin (Alastair Duncan, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Stone must stalk the edge of his own sanity if he is to destroy the rampaging Evil on the outside and banish the very real demons within . . . It could all be over in a SPLIT SECOND. Featuring special effects by Stephen Norrington (Blade) and written by Gary Scott Thompson (The Fast and The Furious), along with an all-star supporting cast that includes Academy Award® Nominees Michael J. Pollard (Tango & Cash) and Pete Postlethwaite (Inception), this cult classic sci-fi thriller will have you on the edge of your seat! *Pollard: 1967, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Bonnie and Clyde, Postlethwaite: 1993 Best Actor in a Supporting Role, In The Name of the Father SPECIAL FEATURES * Special Features May Not Be Rated, Closed Captioned Or In High Definition. Review: Best sci fi movie with Rutger Hauer next to Blade Runner - Great movie. The best Rutger Hauer movie I’ve seen since blade runner. Has a real blade runner, alien, terminator, mad max, lethal weapon, venom, Batman 1989 and Batman begins, Highlander, blade and hellboy vibe to it. Also has like a Paul verhoeven, Ridley Scott and Peter hyams vibe to it because Rutger Hauer worked with verhoeven and Scott before, and that Gary Scott Thompson who wrote this movie, cowrote hollow man with Andrew w Marlowe which was directed by Paul verhoeven, and that Andrew w Marlowe wrote end of days with Arnold Schwarzenegger which was directed by Peter hyams. This is a good movie to watch with blade runner, sleepy hollow, ghostbusters 1 and 2, total recall, robocop, basic instinct, black rain, terminator 1 and 2, tango and cash, big trouble in little china, escape from New York and LA, the thing, army of darkness, marvel’s venom with tom hardy, and end of days. If you want a double dose of sci fi action, this movie with the late Rutger Hauer is worth watching. Review: Split Second: VHS Master-piece upgraded - a classic Rutger Hower at his best and Kim Katrell <3 the story line may be a bit thin but...still very good.. scifi-fantasy/horrer

Overlooked classic.
This is a classic! For all Rutger Hauer fans this is a must. Alastair Duncan is terrific as Dick Durkin. Although I would not classify it as a comedy, it does have some superb moments in it. One of my all-time favorites. Big ******* guns is now part of the lexicon of all we have introduced to this movie. Highly recommended!

Love this movie, a little extra work to figure out how to watch in English w/out subtitles
Really love this movie which was why I paid $20 for a 25 year old movie. I originally had it on laser disc (& still do), but wanted it on DVD again. I had it on DVD from awhile ago but disc started having issues & wouldn't play in one spot. So when that happened I then ordered the reg DVD Euro version (only one avail), which would not play on my DVD player. So my husband was able to get it to play on his computer & copied it to a disc, so I could watch a DVD of the movie. It was terrible. It looked like someone had copied the VHS to a disc & been allowed to sell it on Amazon. So then I found this one & was worried but most people said it would play on their player & that the picture was decent & because it was Blu-ray I was hoping the disc was more durable. Have now had multiple issues with reg DVDs playing fine the previous viewing & then all of the sudden having odd issues & skips, without any manhandling or being left out or scratched or anything, which we haven't had happen YET on a Blu-ray disc. I'm going to give exact instructions for how I got this movie to play in English just in case other people are having the same difficulties. It worked on both of our Blu-ray players this way. 1) trying to do it from the menu (selecting the item to the right of the play button to get languages list ) did not work, it would give the option of English 5.1 but would not 'select' it when I pressed the select button on the controller. 2) my husband found a different way to do it than I did, both ways require for you to start the movie 1st unfortunately, once you get it sorted, you can always hit the back/rewind button to see movie from beginning. So hit the play button (1st one on menu) 3) once the movie has started I hit the pop up/menu button on my Blu-ray remote controller which makes the chapter list come up as well as the language list. Do not select chapter after you change the language, it will mess it up again. Select English 5.1, if they are talking on screen, you will hear it switch to English, then scroll down to the subtitles; don't remember the German words but it looks similar to activate & deactivate, select the de-activate & you should stop seeing the German subtitles. The movie will be playing behind that menu & you can see it. Then hit the pop up/menu button again on your remote to make that menu go away, then use your back or prev button on your remote to back to the beginning of the movie again to watch from the start. Seriously if I hit anything else or tried to go back to the main menu or hit chapter selection from the pop up menu, it would go back to German. Don't do that (unless you want to see it in German). 4) my husband was able to get it to do that the same by starting the movie & hitting the audio button on the Blu-ray player remote then scrolling to English & then turning the subtitles to off. Hope that helps. Try that before returning it. Also if you have more than one Blu-ray player, it might work on one & not the other. Have had that happen on a couple of my DVDs. Just glad this played in my U.S. region Blu-ray player.

About time !
I bought the video back in the 90s when it came out. Back then the safest thing to do was either rent it first or see it on HBO, etc. Then if you liked it, buy it. VHS tapes were still a bit expensive. We've always liked Rutger Hauer. Still do, too bad re: his passing. He was great at B-action movies: LadyHawke, Blade Runner, Wanted: Dead or Alive (with Gene Simmons) "Fu#@ the bonus!" - one of the greatest lines in an action movie. My all time favorite of his remains 'Call of the Wild', based on the Jack London novel, narrated by Richard Dreyfus. I found the DVD once, but it wasn't for Region 1.. Still looking for it ... maybe I'll get lucky? I've been trying to find this DVD for several years, but when found, it was way too expensive, even for me. Finally, I found this copy for less than $60. Waited long enough - snapped it up. We watched it the night we got it. My 16 year-old grandson came down for the weekend ... we watched it again. Our son cane down three days later to pick him up. He had liked it on VHS, so we watched it again - on DVD. This is one movie that will wear out. Maybe I should keep an eye out for an extra copy at a reasonable price? Yup.

Good picture quality. Does it still hold up after all this time? Here and there.

MVD's 2020 Blu Ray release is great!
For years this became a hard-to-find out-of-print DVD, with inferior-quality used discs selling for hundreds. Finally a much-improved quality BluRay release is available for North America. This edition is excellent, with some nice new extras (filmmakers reflecting on the making of the film). It is just a shame that Rutger Hauer has passed away, it would have been great to hear his thoughts, decades later. Even the attention to detail on the jacket (with new artwork, or flip-able to show the original poster/VHS artwork). While the film has a lot of flaws, the performances are great throughtout. It is made great just thru the chemistry of the two leads, Stone and Derkins. It makes me wish they made used those characters in more films.
